The second International Digital Health Summer School held at Maynooth University on June 26 and 27th was focussed on Leapfrog Strategies using the Stay Left, Shift Left-10X paradigm.

As some commentators predict the collapse of current health systems as we know it, the Innovation Value Institute and it’s directed digital health ecosystem are working towards an ordered phase transition to a new kind of wellness and health system fuelled and empowered by Digital technologies.

Many new and emerging Digital Health technologies were presented at the Summer School and as is becoming tradition, IVI has selected five notable 10X technologies which can drive radical transformation of healthcare.

  1. MyoVista® wavECG™ by HeartSciences

The MyoVista is a resting 12-lead ECG device designed to provide AI enabled diagnostic information related to cardiac dysfunction which has traditionally only been available through the use of cardiac imaging. MyoVista enables much earlier heart screening in community or front-line healthcare settings providing 10X benefits through earlier diagnosis, health system cost savings and lives saved. MyoVista detects cardiac dysfunction through AI analysis of a resting ECG rather than requiring an ECHO test which are costly, require specialist facilities and personnel and often have long waiting lists (in some parts of Ireland the ECHO waiting list is more than18 months). Evaluation of the MyoVista in one  NHS care pathway at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust demonstrated the potential for  a 35X financial return in returned bed capacity for the hospital and other benefits. 2. Seismofit®by Ventriject

Seismofit®, a new portable VO2 Max measurement device, developed at Aalborg University in Denmark,  delivers a revolution in cardiovascular fitness using an AI guided 10X approach. VO2max is an extraordinary measure of wellness but previously required individuals to visit a testing lab and to exert themselves on a treadmill. Seismocardiography (SCG) is accelerometer recordings of chest wall vibrations caused by the beating heart and Seismofit uses an AI assisted algorithm to estimate a person’s VO2max in three minutes. Seismofit® reduces the time to complete VO2 testing by 10X, scales access to testing by 10X and lowers the barrier to taking the VO2Max test by 10X.

3. OpenEMR by OpenEMR foundation

The vision of the OpenEMR foundation is a world where every health care provider has access to high-quality health care information technology and has a mission to be the worldwide leader in open-source electronic medical records software implementation.

OpenEMR is the world’s most popular open source electronic health record and a digital health platform with OpenEMR as it’s foundation, operating in an extensive living lab was demonstrated by HSE Social Inclusion at the Summer School which delivered 10X better clinical information, 10X faster access and 10X cheaper costs compared to current systems available in Ireland. UK based company OpenPlanIT have led the configuration of a Digital Health Stack based on OpenEMR in collaboration with HSE Social Inclusion. 4. KEWS300 by Syncrophi

Vitals Signs Automation is hospitals is a tremendous opportunity to provide better care and early detection of deteriorating patients as well as improving nursing productivity. KEWS is a software product which is deployed in hospital settings at point-of-care with it’s principal function is to make Patient Observation Records a central element within the Health Information System, informing accurate, responsive clinical care and supporting better Patient outcomes. It allows the caregiver, such as a Nurse, to complete Patient observations in a digitally-supported mode through the use of a Tablet touchscreen which is WiFi-linked to the Central Station of the Ward and also to the Server. KEWS has delivered 10X reduction in Early Warning Scores errors and preliminary data shows that new Acute bed capacity is added back to an acute hospital at 1/100th of the cost of a new build based on reduced length of stay.

5. Digicare

Digicare is paperless medication system which digitizes medication management, from prescription to administration, reducing paperwork and errors. It enhances efficiency, improves patient safety, and aligns with healthcare systems goals for a modernized, sustainable approach to medication management, benefiting both patients and healthcare providers. In a deployment at the Royal Hospital Donnybrook, medication errors were reduced by 10X and a 10X faster deployment of the system was accomplished in comparison to conventional solutions, with a third of staff time saved. The prescription management templates provided in Digicare acts as a magic wand reducing variability and improving outcomes. The rapid deployment of Digicare across Ireland to more than 100 sites is an example of rapid 10X scale.

The five selected solutions are all exemplars of what Insightscare have called Curley’s Law whereby Digital Health solutions proactively applied to health, deliver 10X benefits often across all dimensions of the quintuple aim (better care, lower cost, experience, quality of life, sustainability).

Prof Martin Curley said “similar to the original Moore’s law, this new law is both an industry competitive challenge and observed phenomenon, and because of the power of the digital and the fact that healthcare is so information intensive we can increasingly reliably define, design and deliver digital health solutions for 10X benefits, which is an absolute requirement for meaningful health system transformation”.

All five organizations have been invited to demonstrate and discuss their solutions at the 4th Digital Health Symposium at United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) being held on Sept 24-26th in New York.
