Circularity in the Construction Industry

Thursday 29th February 3pm-4.30pm (GMT)

Online Event

The interest in circular business models has been accelerating as societal environmental concerns grow. The construction industry is the world’s greatest consumer of raw materials, so developing sustainable practices has gotten much attention. In addition, there are goals to achieve, such as the European Green Deal. As a result, the construction sector is critical to meeting climate policy commitments, and it is especially necessary to incorporate prevention and reuse into construction activities. This webinar will bring together leaders and experts in circularity in construction to discuss the latest developments, innovations, and challenges in the field. Join us for an interesting presentations from speakers followed by a dynamic discussion addressing the key issues and considerations currently facing this area.

This project is funded under the EPA Research Programme 2021-2030. The EPA Research Programme is a Government of Ireland initiative funded by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications.

Helen Glindvad Kristensen

Postdoctoral researcher at VISION project

Claudia Roessing

Claudia Roessing has completed her PhD at Maynooth University, where she investigated the variations of data lifecycles based on data requirements in the Smart City scenario.
She has years of experience in the software development industry with a background in Business Analysis and Consulting and Computer Science.
She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the VISION project, which is financed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and focuses on reducing the use of virgin materials in the Irish building sector.

Giovanni Impoco

Giovanni is a Circularity Lead at the Irish Green Building Council and he is working on the Circular Economy in the construction and build environment: a need for a roadmap project.

CEO and Co-Founder of Arcology International

Colette van Jaarsveld

With over 24 years of experience as an Interior Architect, Colette van Jaarsveld is an innovator in sustainable design, construction, and component manufacture. Her influence spans South Africa, Ireland, and the Middle East, where she has garnered awards for her work within the interior-built environment, working with clients such as Aviva, Sony, Emaar, and Marriott.

Colette’s passion for sustainability led to her early involvement in the development and distribution of sustainable materials in interior construction, notably supplying over 300 meters of recycled vanities within the King Abdullah Sports Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Arcology System, Colette’s latest venture, revolutionizes interior construction with its adaptable kit-of-parts hardware, sensors, and generative-AI technology. This innovative approach not only creates modular, flexible spaces that adapt to usage patterns but also unlocks circular economy value from the beginning of the value chain.

Thomas Romm

Passionate about climate repair. His architectural practice involves research, planning, and construction with a focus on environmental impact. As an expert in circular construction, Thomas is working on urban development and large construction sites, designing urban mining concepts. He is a founding member of the cooperative BauKarussell, a network of socio-economic companies for recycling-oriented demolition. Thomas teaches ecology for architects at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna at the Institute for Art and Architecture.

Architect at Gladsaxe Municipality in Denmark

Helen Glindvad Kristensen

The first couple of years after her education, Helen has been working with Housing, planning, and agricultural buildings/farms and planning of those in the landscape. After that, she worked for a couple of years in housing. For the last 16 years, she has worked for the city of Gladsaxe.

She has done lots of projects with learning facilities, and future learning facilities. For the last 14 years, she has had a specific focus on sustainable development in architecture. From resources to low-emission buildings, to environmental certification of our building to have to recycle, upcycle, and use our resources the best way.

There are a lot of barriers working in this field, so her approach to sustainable architecture is to look at our construction activities in a holistic way. CO2 is not the only answer.
