Technological innovations are accelerating disruption in consumer health and wellbeing but there is still a disconnect between current healthcare, focused on disease management, and an emerging holistic and empowered approach to health and wellbeing.
Responsible AI for Person Empowerment on Health and Wellbeing (RIPE), which began in 2018, aims to exploit responsible AI and develop a methodology for empowering people in terms of comprehension, informed decision and self-management of health and wellbeing. This is realised by processing health data of a person (health information, health status, lifestyle information, etc.) that come from heterogeneous sources and are normally used by experts in separate contexts. RIPE combines these data by using AI and provides the person with information that is simple, trustworthy and tailored to the user needs.

Burnout at work is a prominent issue and changing forms of work have brought novel forms of job strain.
Beginning in 2022, this research project seeks to better understand the contemporary experience of workplace stress and burnout and the role technology can play in alleviating and mitigating these outcomes. Building on current knowledge and collaborating with industry, the aim of the research is to investigate and build a data-driven technological solution that drives behaviour change and more positive work outcomes.
Medical texts (reports, articles, etc.) are usually written by professionals (physicians, medical researchers, etc.) who use their own language and communication style. On the other hand, these texts are often read by health consumers who do not have the same skills and vocabularies of the experts.
We have built a system, a SImplifier of Medical texts for Patients and Less Experts (SIMPLE), that processes online medical documents and provides users with consumer terms and explanations. By doing so, the user will have everything at hand by dealing with a single document that contains all the useful information for understanding and deciding on the subject.
This project began in 2015 in collaboration with the University of Palermo and the Italian National Council of Research. SIMPLE was funded under Italian ‘Smart Health’ Project (PON04a2_C), carried out within the Smart Cities Program 2007–2013; and Italian ‘ADAPT – Accessible Data for Accessible Proto-Types in Social Sector’ Project (PON Smart Cities SCN_00447).
From 2018 onwards, this project has supported the health and wellbeing of citizens and patients by providing tools that help them find and understand health information, make informed choices and actively self-manage their daily lives. These are the three basic steps to patient empowerment which, as defined by the World Health Organization, is “a process through which people gain greater control over decisions and actions affecting their health”.
