Open Innovation – An opportunity to address current challenges

To address the current disruptions brought about by the current pandemic situation, many organizations are turning to open innovation models to innovate faster. We explore some case studies in health care, retail, food and manufacturing to see what can be learned from the current experiences and the future journey.

The Speakers

Dr Martin Curley

Martin Curley is Director of the Digital Academy and Open Innovation at the Health Service Executive (HSE), helping enable the digital transformation of Ireland’s health service. Most recently Martin was Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the HSE. Prior to joining the HSE Martin was Senior Vice President and group head for Global Digital Practice at Mastercard. Previously Martin was vice president at Intel Corporation and Director/GM of Intel Labs Europe, Intel’s network of more than 50 research labs which he help grow across the European region. He also served as a senior principal engineer at Intel Labs Europe leading Intel’s research and innovation engagement with the European Commission and the broader European Union research ecosystem. Prior to this Martin was Global Director of IT Innovation and Director of IT Strategy and Technology at Intel. Earlier in his Intel career, he held a number of senior positions for Intel in the United States and Europe. He also worked in research and management positions at GE in Ireland and Philips in the Netherlands.

Dr Matthew Mullarkey

Matthew Mullarkey is the director of the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) Program for the University of South Florida (USF) Muma College of Business and an instructor in the Information Systems and Decision Sciences (ISDS) Department.

Matthew’s areas of research interest include design-science research and action research in the evaluation and creation of information systems, smart cities, IoT, healthcare, social networking and data science. He teaches using case-based discussions that engage doctoral, MBA and MIS undergraduates in complex business decisions that typically involve a technology component. His case-study-based capstone courses emphasize critical thinking, business analysis and the impact of information technology and systems on real‐world, business decision‐making. He is the editor‐in‐chief of the USF Muma Case Review and an editor and reviewer for a number of academic journals.

Digitalisation Lead, Siemens Ireland

As the Digitalisation Lead for Siemens in Ireland, Joan Mulvihill continues to be at the forefront of driving technology adoption in Ireland. Having held the position of CEO of the Irish Internet Association for 7 years, followed by 2 years as the Centre Director for the Irish Centre for Cloud Computing and Commerce, her role at Siemens builds on Siemens’ and her deep commitment to and understanding of the needs of Irish business for their digital transformation. Digitalisation means working differently. Siemens will always work with their clients to meet their operational technology needs with world class products and services and now through Digitalisation, Siemens leverages its domain expertise with clients to transform and create the businesses of their future.

Gary O’Meara

Gary is currently CEO of Meath Enterprise and Managing Director of the new Boyne Valley Food Innovation District. He is also Chairperson of Ireland’s National Association of Community Enterprise Centres (NACEC), a member of the governments SME & Entrepreneurship Consultation Group (SMEe), the national partner and advisor for Startup Genome and an active member of the Institute of Directors in Ireland. He has almost 25 years’ experience managing and developing businesses across multiple sectors from manufacturing, supply chain logistics, HR / recruitment, media advertising, marketing, public relations, digital media, community & social enterprise, facilities management, event management and regional enterprise development. He has started, scaled and exited a number of businesses and has experience managing a wide variety of projects for commercial and non-profit organisations in Ireland, UK and the USA.

The IVI Webinar series aims to bring together thought leaders from the world of academia, business and public sector to address key challenges in the areas of innovation, technology management and technology adoption. In 2020 the webinar series will replace the IVI annual summit which has taken place since 2007 in Maynooth University and has attracted speakers and attendees from across the globe.
