In 2019, with the Health Service Executive and the University of Limerick, IVI co-designed an innovative new masters’ programme, the MSc in Digital Health Transformation. Now in its second year, nearly 60 students joined Michael Hanley, IVI Head of Education to explore dimensions of leading organisations through digital transformation. Digital Transformation signifies a fundamental change in how technology, people, and processes will combine to radically enhance healthcare. Technology is helping us live longer and lead safer, healthier, more productive lives. The impact of digital in healthcare will enhance quality of health and save lives for decades to come. With this mind, this module considers the fundamentals of digital transformation, and how integrated technology can help healthcare providers to work differently. It explores the cultural, structural, and technology dynamics of transformation within organisations and provides participants with a critical understanding of the major benefits and challenges associated with the management and execution of digital transformation programmes.
 Syllabus:
- Digital transformation concepts; theories; practises; emerging trends; impact on the healthcare ecosystem.
- Characteristics of agile and innovative organisations.
- The business value of digital technology in healthcare.
- Design Thinking: stages; processes; techniques; CX – customer experience (e.g. patients & service providers); outcomes.
- Organisational digital capability: evaluation; analysis; improvement planning; implementation.
- Enabling improvement in systems; design patterns; service layers, service integration.
- Approaches, models, frameworks, and practises associated with Strategic Planning to support Digital Transformation programmes in healthcare
- Principles of organisation governance for digital transformation.
- Change management in the context of digital transformation initiatives.
- Structural and functional approaches to improving culture; the competency / capability matrix; skills frameworks; digital skills.
Joining Michael as guest speakers were Gar McCriosta, HSE; Dr. Marco Alfano, IVI; and Professor Piero Formica. All three explored different aspects of managing digitally enabled change. While the module lectures are now complete, the hard work for students really begins, as they must now complete both the end-of-semester paper for the module, and design their MSc dissertation research question.
